Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP has opened an office in Hong Kong, the second of the firm’s Asia offices, the first of which was in Singapore in 2008. The new office will turn its focus to corporate transactions and corporate compliance, regulation and investigations. Kelly Austin, joining the firm as a partner after eight years in Hong Kong with General Electric International, will anchor the new office. Joseph Barbeau, partner in the firm’s Palo Alto office, will be relocating to the new office along with associate Kate Yin, who is relocating from the Los Angeles office.

Citigroup has launched its stock broking operations in Malaysia, which moves the company closer to its goal of having equity sales and trading operations throughout Southeast Asia. Other than Vietnam, in which Citigroup plans to buy a minority stake into a local broker, some say that Citigroup’s expansion was complete. Citigroup is banking on being one of the top three foreign institutional brokers in Malaysia within three years. Citi has hired three people for the operation, already, and plans on hiring three more still.
