Rivalry arose amongst Tokyo based international firms on the night of nights for Japan’s legal fraternity: The ALB Japan Law Awards, 2011. Anderson Mori & Tomotsune, Mori Hamada & Matsumoto, Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu, and Nishimura & Asahi – Japan’s four big law firms competed for top spot in up to 18 categories this year. A separate competition has arisen amongst the Japan’s international law firms. Front-runners Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, Sullivan & Cromwell, Linklaters Tokyo, Davis Polk & Wardwell, Morrison & Forester, and Baker & McKenzie GJBJ had multiple nominations in the competition for some of the evening’s biggest awards which included the desirable International Deal Firm of the Year award.
JP Mitsubishi UFJ, Shinsei Bank, and Sumitomo Mitsui dominated the nominations for the Banking & Financial Services In-House Team of the Year award. The awards festival will be held on March 31, 2011, Ritz Carlton Tokyo. The finalists for the Japan Deal of the Year will be announced on the evening.
The leading number of nominations are as follows: Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu – 18, Mori Hamada & Matsumoto – 17, Nishimura & Asahi – 12, Anderson Mori & Tomotsune – 12, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett – 12, and JP Morgan – 9.
